Homer and his Guide, 1874 oil painting by William-Adolphe Bouguereau.

Homer was an ancient Greek poet. He is credited as the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, two epic works about the Trojan War. It is not certain whether he was a real historical figure or whether either of the two works were written by a single person.

According to legend, Homer was blind.

The works of Homer are dated to the 8th or 7th century BCE, making them some of the oldest European literary works that have survived to this day. Homer was already highly regarded in antiquity, and is considered by many as one of the founders of Western literature.

Several authors tried to imitate Homer's style of writing, notably Virgil.
