The story is written in first person. The author is in love with Paulina but she leaves him and marries a mutual friend, Julio Montero. She visits the narrator, and she leaves soon. Montero was waiting for her outside, on a rainy night. The writer goes to study to an foreign country and comes back after a few years. She visits him and embraces him on a rainy night. She goes out, frightened, and meets with Montero, as the first time. The writer notices that he lived in Montero's illusion because he later finds out that she is dead; Montero killed her that very night prior to the author's travel.
