Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
From Literawiki, the what to read wiki
This book is the first in Douglas Adams' other series, apart from The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Perhaps because the Dirk Gently series is shorter (and thus, didn't have as much opportunity to get bogged down), it is my favorite of Adams' work, and then billing the client. Quite often, the client can't make out just why they should pay for things that don't seem to have anything to do with finding (for instance) that lost cat. Even if Dirk Gently learns a lot of other things like why there is life on Earth and how that couch got stuck on his landing, even though no one can rotate it so as to move it off the landing.
